All in a Day's Work

SO, CHERYL -- WHAT DID YOU DO TODAY?

You mean besides negotiating music copyright clearances so my clients could use Born to Be Wild, Start The Commotion, Dream On, The Girl from Ipanema, Both Sides Now, Star Wars, O Fortuna, Theme From The Twilight Zone, Hello Goodbye, Ghostbusters,What a Wonderful World, Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend, In-a-Gadda-da-Vida and Fight Fiercely, Harvard?

YEAH, OR MAYBE CLEAR SOMETHING UNUSUAL?

You mean like Happy Trails by Roy Rogers, or The Theme From M*A*S*H?

YEAH, OR DEAL WITH -- YOU KN0W,
REALLY BIG ARTISTS
SO I CAN DROP A FEW NAMES.

You mean like U-2 or Elton John or Celine Dion or John Williams or Fleetwood Mac or Aerosmith or the whole bloody London Symphony Orchestra?

GEE -- DON'T YOU KNOW SOMEBODY THAT'S MORE -- EDGY?

Don't get me started.

SO WHAT DID YOU DO AFTER LUNCH?

You mean besides clearing the rights to use film clips from
The Three Stooges, the NFL, NASCAR races, footage of P. T. Barnum, Yogi Bear, Elvis Presley, and clips from Saturday Night Live and The War of the Worlds, plus track down rare footage of the Australian outback and some cockroach races?

YEAH, BESIDES THAT.

I watered my ferns. Now get out of here,
I've got work to do.

In this wacky world of communications, when you find the perfect piece of new or archival recorded music, or film clip or stock footage - the fun has just begun. Intellectual property laws are stern, and copyright permission for a single item requires signed releases from all its owners: composers, publishers, record companies, actors, movie studios - and sometimes even the heirs of a recently departed artist. Where do you begin? It's enough to give you a brain cramp.

A single phone call to First Light makes it all very simple and friendly. We have a 20-year track record in negotiating licenses on behalf of film and video producers, ad agencies, foundations, broadcasters, and some of the world's largest and smallest corporations. Our computer contains all the right data. We're on a first-name basis with the rights-and-permissions people at Warner Brothers, Sony Entertainment, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, plus record companies like Sony/BMG, EMI, and too many more to count. Our contacts are truly worldwide.

We also know that you have budget constraints, and we understand the art of the deal. We can't work miracles, but we have successfully negotiated $10,000 asking fees down to $1,000. Once in a while, we've obtained permissions from superstars for free. Because we are a small shop, our fees are very reasonable.

It is a seller's market, and You Can't Always Get What You Want: after all, a well-known rock star once refused to grant permission to a U.S. President for the use of a song. But as our clients will testify, we're persuasive with even the crankiest copyright owners. Call us, and your knotty copyright problem will become a very small part of your day's work.
